Female Film Competition IS Laughing Matter

Acting, Film Work, Video, Writing on April 22nd, 2010 No Comments

Kathryn Bigelow made history this year at the 82nd Academy Awards as the first woman to earn the distinction of “Best Director.”

Her win surprised me! Surprised not because a woman won the award, but surprised because no woman had won the award before her. Sure, other women have been nominated (2003: Sofia Coppola, “Lost in Translation;” 1993: Jane Campion, “The Piano;” 1975: Lina Wertmuller, “Seven Beauties”), but it’s about damn time!

Want to see the Best Female Filmmakers in Minnesota?

Women Stand Up! A Comedy Cabaret and IFP Minnesota present: “WOMEN STAND UP AND SHOOT: A COMEDIC FILM COMPETITION!” From their website:

“The purpose of WOMEN STAND UP AND SHOOT is to promote and encourage women writers, actors and directors in film comedies. Send in your best woman-made, woman-starring short comedy films!”

The films will be judged by nationally-known funny women: Jackie Kashian, Mary Jo Pehl, and Lizz Winstead.

Get Your Tickets

Come see the top ten films and find out who the winners are on Saturday, May 8th, at the Bryant Lake Bowl at 10:00 pm. You can buy tickets here or by calling the Bryant Lake Bowl Box Office at 612-825-8949 (there’s no credit card “service fee” via phone orders).

Below is the film I helped Melissa Hoppe with this spring. Enjoy!
