You may not know this, but I grew up one house away from my dad’s parents. Grandma and Grandpa Venske were always close. In the summer I’d go over to their garden and help pick raspberries from the patch.
To this day every time I see or taste or smell or think of raspberries, I think of Grandma and Grandpa.
And as it happens, today is Grandma Venske’s 85th birthday and now I’m thinking about those raspberries again…
Specifically my “raspberry” of a performance in 2008’s Bella & the Revolution. I’ll cut myself some slack though, it was only my second student film (ever). I clearly had no idea what I was doing.
Like any type of learning there’s trying and failing. Trying and failing better. Repeat, practice, perfect.
Unfortunately, when you’re acting on camera there’s oftentimes footage of every theatrical train-wreck.
My delivery and tone and pacing and intention is so off and so bad I should’ve won a Golden Raspberry Award. Or at the very least been nominated for a Razzie!
You’ll have to judge for yourself.
I’d say enjoy what you’re about to watch, but that’s impossible.
So just think of your grandma; her hugs, laughs, wisdom, and kisses. And even if what you see is in fact terrible (it is), at least you’ll feel G’ma’s love and know you’re going to be okay.
Happy Birthday, Grandma! I hope you enjoy whatever’s in that Victoria’s Secret bag!
